Whipfinisher???

I think I want to buy a finisher but do not know which to get for tying jigs. What do yall think? Went fishing on the Tombigbee @ Coffeeville and kept 10 fish for a 116.5" inches of crappie. Caught some on jigs that I tied. I think I an hooked on tying now. You can see a pic on the Alabama State Post.

If you really have to buy one get the Materelli not the Thompson, the Mat is much easier to use but handwhipping is even cheaper.

I bought a whip finisher, but broke it in the 1st month I had it. :mad: It did teach me the motion of how the thread is actually wrapped for the whip finish tho and now I just do it by hand. Maybe not as acurate placing the thread as the tool but it works just fine.

I also hand finish. Lots quicker than the whip and you can still place
the knot where you want it.

I use a whip finisher on everything I tie but it is not as important with jigs as it can be with flies. I still whip finish my jigs but I sometimes I will do it by hand. If you get ones, just don;t get a cheapo one. II have used the same one for 12 years or more and it is still just as valuable as the day I got it.

I would say that when you look just look in the $8-15 range and make sure it at least looks like it is made well. I have one like the ones you find on Cabelas, they are Cabelas whip finishers with the spring loaded arm. Mine is Orvis but it was given to me. My next one will be one of the fixed ones just because it looks like you get better clearance for bigger stuff when you need it.

As for being quicker, maybe, but I can do 6-10 wraps in a blink of any eye with my whip finisher.

That might have been my problem. :rolleyes: I think mine costed $1.69! :D:o:D Oh well, it taught me what I couldn't quite figure out from just watching the videos on how to do it by hand. ;)

I think that if you will be tying jigs for multiple species of fish, it will serve you well to learn the whip finsh by hand.

Reason? Some materials (e.g. silicone skirt) may require a tie-in behind the jig head with the strands facing away from the hook bend. This is done to allow for a nicely-flared spread of the material. Sometimes this process requires very large finishing loops in order to allow longer strands to move through them easily.

This isn't a silicone-skirted jig, but it should give you a better idea of what I'm mentioning here.
