Monofilament - Ever tie with it?

I like to tie bass jigs for both personal use and for other area anglers who show interest in my jigs. When I do, I experiment and have come to use a variety of "threads" available to fishermen, seamstresses, tailors, and crafters. Monofilament is just one of them.

The jig pictured at the top is mine . Used 0.005-in. diameter, clear monofilament to tie this jig.

Mono is used in rugs, apparel, home furnishings, and the like. Here's a pretty intersting link regarding mono use. I was surprised at the manufacturer.

My primary spools contain 0.004 and 0.005-in. monofilament in smoke and clear versions, respectively. Coats manufactured these. They've worked well for tying hair jigs. I plan to use a little 0.004-in. diameter monofilament for some of my future crappie jigs.

Have you ever used it? If so, any thoughts?

Never have, but I've seen it used, usually with saltwater flies. I have a video of a guy tying a Crazy Charlie (bonefish pattern), and he wraps thick mono around the hook to form the body.

I've also seen bloodworm imitations tied with mono. There are a couple of different ways to do it:

1) You can use red mono on a regular hook or

2) You can use clear mono on a red hook.

The end result will look something like this:

Very good fly for trout and bluegill.

Never found any spooled or I would use it on my saltwater flies, on the surf candy and simlar epoxy body flies.

I have used it for San Juan Worms, Red wigglers and other worm patterns. I usually use 20-30 lb. test for them. I have tried to use it for tying on bucktail but it would eventually work loose and never held tight. I think using a really good head cement would help a lot. I have taken 50 and 75 lb. test and melted the ends for eyes or tied knots in it for legs. As a body material it works really well and anything and everything you put under it shows through really well even with the red and yellow colored lines. I would bet you could make some wicked river witches with it and hellgramites.

I do keep a little of the mono around and have used it for some special things. Have a few sizes and maybe a few colors as well.

I like to use mono sewing thread when tying 2 colored hair jigs, light color on the bottom, darker color on top, works good with craft hair & kip tail. Lets the color of the hair show thru.

I have used it on some personal stuff, but have not had requests for it on items I sell.

Years ago Berkley used 6lb mono to tie guides on their cherrywood rods.
I had a repair(i'm a rodbuilder) come in and I couldn't match the color of the
wraps. I called Berkley and asked them what they used. After the rep
laughed at me trying to match the color he told me what it was. He also sent
me a very large (1/4 lb) spool at no cost.:D

I've used it to tie some northern and musky jigs. I don't use head cement
on them I use two part epoxy for strength. I've had some vicious strikes
that ate the bucktail off, but the thread held.
