Ive never fished for them in july , but was wanting a few to fry!

Good luck on finding out. I have asked the same question online and in person and have gotten a bunch of different answers. Me and a neighbor got into some yesterday on some ledges and steep rocky banks. They weren't huge but we kept 23 that were filleting size. We also tried the shallow places and caught a few but nothing like the deeper water. We were drop shotting jigs and sponge spiders. Many of the gills seem suspended at various depths.
By the way, this was at KY Lake.
Good luck with Laurel Lake. The pleasure boats are thicker than thieves this time of year. Mrs. FishlessMike and I have been having excellent luck with BIG gills on Woods Creek Lake lately. We use crickets. We've been finding the big ones about half way back into the coves fishing tight to the cover fishing the 4-5 ft. depth. You may catch a hundred, but 30-40 of them will be in the 8-9 inch range and heavy. :D
