Nissan 9.9 hp. starting problem

My '96 9.9hp. elec. start Nissan runs well when warmed up and idles smoothly without smoking. However, it is really hard to start the first time. I have to pump the bulb a lot, choke it and then crank the motor a lot until it hits. It then smokes a lot, and tends to die if I put it in gear. The smoke indicates that it might be flooded, but that's the only way it will start.

I had the carb. overhauled earlier but that didn't seem to help. I would take it back to the mechanic, but it's my fishing season and the motor would be out of commission for several weeks. Any suggestions?

Are you removing the gas line after each trip? You could be getting extra gas in the motor from the line being hook up, especially in this heat, a lot of pressure from the tank could be sending gas into the carb while sitting. Open the vent cap on the tank and leave it open. Try starting next time without pumping the ball. I have an Evinrude that does the same thing. I started removing the line in the heat and it usually starts in one or two pulls now, in cold weather I leave it on. That might get you through the season.

you may also wanna check for crap blocking the jets on the carb ( i seriously doubt that this is your prob) to do this find the high end jet and turn it all the way in GENTLY count each full revolution the screw makes until it bottoms out you will probally have like 3.5 turns until it bottoms out. did i say GENTLY now remove the jet after you know how many turns it took to bottom it out, check it for any crap that may have built up on it then replace screwing it in GENTLY until it bottoms out and then screw it out the number of turns it took to make it bottom out when u screwed in the first time.
