I've caught gar and bowfin both on white spinner baits before. Lot of fun, but I hate to have to get them off. That one in the picture isn't very large either. A good 3 foot one will give you a heck of a fight. I've seen one almost as long as my 2 man pirogue out of Toledo Bend in LA...might have gone 6 feet. According to wikipedia, the current world record is 279 lbs.
As for eating them, some people do, but the only thing I've ever heard of is gar balls. Just as an FYI, I looked it up and found a recipe for them. Here's the link. Can't say I'll ever try it, but someone out there might.

Anyway, hope that helps the curious. If anyone's ever tried the gar balls, let me know how they are. I've always been curious, but not enough to try them.
Yea, later on that day i saw one pushing 5 feet. He gave up a hell of a fight, Using 20 lb p line fluoro i hoissted him up a good 3 feet to land, We were on a dock thingy. Ive heard of peopleeating them but dont know if i would.

thats probably a long nose gar givin ur area....the ones LAFN speaks of are prolly the alligator gar.....who's roe is poisonous....far as I know, longnose gar are edible through and through?
Yeah, I believe alligator gar are the only ones I've ever seen around here. I was down below Lake Charles this weekend crabbing and some guys on the bank said they caught a 6 foot gar. I didn't get to see it, but we had another toothy friend hovering around.
Had a blast, but he gave me the heebie jeebies having him and his other 2 friends around, especially with kids around.
Yea they are. An older feller that was next to me said he has a friend that eats em'.

all gar are good to eat but the gator gar are the best since they are the biggest and the roe of all gar are poisonous. As a kid I killed all of a neighbors chickens by tossing the guts and roe from some spotted garinto the pen.
I release all my fish... just before my fingers touch the grease.
