I hear you. They're quick, and can strip your bait before you even knew they were there. I fish with jigs & powerbait crappie nibbles pretty often. A bluegill can snatch the crappie nibble right off your jig about as fast as a lightning strike! :)Quote:

Where did crappies come from anyway?
When we were kids here in NY there was only sunfish, bluegill and perch in the 'panfish' family. Now when you mention crappie folks just stare at ya! :confused:
I am an avid bream fisherman, I use them for flathead bait, they are excellent bait for Lake Houston flatheads and big blues :cool:
Ultla lite rod and reels and a tube of crickets or worms mid April thru early June is a great time to catch hand sized gills. When they are spawning you can actually hear a "popping" noise along the banks under bushes/limbs and such. If you ever spot a gill bed there could be several rounded mounds together (usually in shallow ends of coves) or either one hugh rounded bed the size of a tractor time black with fish. 'Gills make for great table fare. The smaller gills make good catfish bait on jugs too. Bream heads do good around here hand hooking catfish too. ;)
I'm from the south (Jackson,MS) and I enjoy bream (bluegill, sunfish, etc). The are often overlooked at large spillways and grow pretty big 1/2 to 1 lbs in most cases.
Don't forget "speckled perch", strawberry bass, calico bass and paper mouths =crappie.
But I hear you, Shadow is right..."bream" is what I hear most southerners say when they are talking about shellcrackers, etc. If you hear a southerner say "perch" you better ask a question because most of the real perch fishing is up north.
I like throwing under big boat houses with a jig head/small swim and lock the reel then let it drop then reel then drop and POW..they hit like a freight train. Gotta love em:D:D They are fun to fish and I agree on a great fish for getting a kid interested in fishing.
Sorry Shadow but I have to say this to the fella, and I'll give proof of what I'm saying! Sac-a-lait is really a mix between a white and black crappie.

Frog, but in louisiana you may be one of the very few that took the time to look that up. I know most of the people around the lafayette and opolusaus area call them sac-au-lait and I would bet that 99% of them don't know that that is actually a cross between a white and black. Not saying you are wrong just that what most call a sac-au-lait is just a crappie (black or white)
