    Default FYI Shenango

Was by both Rt 18 and Rt 846 today. All ice is gone, but with the rain Sunday, the water has a muddy look to it. The swim beach area is open, and saw a couple cars parked on West Lake road, and making the trek back to the celery farm area to fish, and saw some others fishing else where. Water is still below summer fill. There will be no trout fishing below the dam, because of the PCB levels in it. They will be stocking trout, between Hamburg Bridge, and Big Bend this year instead. The problem I see, is that a lot of this area is deeper water, and as far as wearing waders to fish it, some might be taking their life in their own hands. Have canoed and taken my boat up into this area from the lake before. Also, fishermen will be hard pressed to fish from the bank, as there isn't a lot of area to do that either, unless they have went thru and cleaned the bank areas out. Comments welcome.

Looks like I'll have to get some trout patterns while fishing for eyes. Haven't fished the out flow since the fish commission required a trout stamp. Just bought a new pole and reel for crappies this morning will be out tomorrow to try it out. I'll hit my ice out spot since it's suppose to be cloudy.

Tried the new pole out this morning. First cast a 11 inch perch. Rest of the morning nothing but short perch. Water was surprisingly clear. That is the second perch over 10 inches this year out of the lake. Maybe we may actually get some nice perch this year. It tells me the predator fish aren't feeding on the perch or there aren't many predators left. Quite a few dead shad on the shore line.

Went out this morning for 3 hours. First spot I went to had shore ice out about 5 feet. Second spot had some bay ice about the size of a football field. I like to fish the spot but early morning it is bad because you have to look into the sun and the glare off the water makes it hard to see your float. Started shallow and worked my cast further out. Finally found the fish on a bar a good 60-80 feet from shore, 6 foot down. Caught 9 fish, none larger than 11 inches. But all fish were heavy.

Beautify morning today. A nice covering of snow and no wind this morning. Nice morning to be fishing. First cast a 11 inch perch full of eggs. An hour later one 12 inch crappie than nothing the rest of the morning. Only 2 bites.

Current in the lake has been strong. Wind blowing from right to left and your float goes from left to right. Wind was blowing 10-15 mph and the float was moving into the wind.

Got the winter blues so I hit the lake this morning. Haven't been out for a while. The lake went a nice fish able hight to a low mess. Water level has dropped almost 4 1/2 feet since I last went. Add injury to insult the ice had a skim coat of ice on many sections so that put a damper on my early season spot. Water is dirt and milky. Fished 3 hours and not a hit. Fought ice in the guides. Time to see if I can fish some deep water tomorrow. Hope the skim ice disappears.
