    Default Redear Questions???

I have been fishing a sandpit that has a decent population of redear. I can catch them in late spring early summer when they are on the beds but the rest of the year is tough. I have been using spikes for bait. Should I switch bait or stick with the maggots? Do these fish get real sluggish in the winter? Thanks for any help or opinions.

    Thanks
    Cody

ok, heres the deal. you need to use red wigglers as bait most of the time. tie a size 4 aberdeen hook on the line and put a couple big split shot 3 feet up the line, put 2-3 wigglers on there and toss it into 10-15 feet of water. set the rod down, and tighten the line up a little. if it doesn't get hit in 10 minutes crank it in a few turns and let it sit again. they stay on the bottom most of the time, and just like crappies they don't bite sometimes.

I catch a lot on maggots. Just fish deeper than you do in the spring and on the bottom. It doesn't hurt to experiment with baits, but I think bait location is more important. Give me the wrong bait in the right place everytime.

Lighten up on your terminal tackle as well. Small hooks and light line will help a lot.
