I couldn't agree more to the location of gills relating to their beds. Your bigger fish are going to come off that first break. Yes, you're going to pick up some nice fish in the immediate shallows that you can see, but you're biggest fish are going to be just out of sight range where that first transition occurs...

    Default Big'o Biguns

G-3 is right about the beds ,on or near the full moon ,almost every month of the year ,i catch big chinks and gills on and near the beds.
but as you have said MATT the lions share of the big ones ,off the moon i catch deep. of course deep here in CHICOT LAKE ,in west central Evangeline parish Louisiana is between six and eight feet.although i have caught them in ten and twelve foot of water on the channel .
as i fish fly rods and artificial flys ,both weighted and without weight ,i can not speak to the slip sinker.
although the bottom is where the biguns are the slip sinker makes since, and the long shank #4 is a good chioce for live bait, although my wife uses a #2 long shank, and i must admit i have been known to tight line a few with a fly rod and live bait.
i do believe that cool deep water holds more oxygen, and large active fish need more of it.

I really don't target bluegills or the like anymore, but you're writing is great.
"Mister, I love the way you wear that hat."
    "You don't know nothin'."
