I use #6 short shank and keep a pencil in my pocket for the one's hooked deep. When that happen's I simply stick the pencil in their mouth and pinch the line with my thumb and spin the fish around and tada the hook is out.A stick bobber work's just as well.I use gold aberdene hook's also as they give a little better.

I match the hook size to the bait I'm using. For maggots, I use #14 or #16 dry fly hooks. For bigger baits, I might use a #10 or #12. Smaller hooks allow the bait to behave more naturally which results in more bites, IMO.

If you use sensitive floats or circle hooks, you don't have to worry about swallowed hooks.

    I use a #8 Aberdeen Tru-turn hook with crickets.

    Works for me.

#8 short shank Mustad. I like them because when hung on submerged stumps or logs, they tend to bend just enough to pull loose and not break my line. I can usually bend the hook back in place with my fingers.

#6 short shank in red or gold. Have a pair of forceps to remove from deeply hooked fish.
