Default My First Blue Gill Popper

Thought I would see what you guys think. I got a tiny bit of paint on the legs, but that will happen since I paint after putting the legs in. I really didn't think out the color pattern, but it still cam out OK. I have a lot of ideas about this stuff.

That is my plan as soon as I can make a run to get some green paint. Should be pretty soon. I never needed the colors I now need with this new item.

Nice popper! The tail might be a bit to long. I like different sizes in tails sometimes.

I think you are right as I looked at it when I finished and that was the first thing that hit me was to make the tail a little shorter. Maybe even half that length.

Heck I even got out of order making it and had to put the clear coat on after I finished and next time I will make the tail shorter and finish the paint before I tie it, LOL!

I have even thought about making some with squirrel tail hair for the tail.

    Thanks,

How about making the legs longer, so that when you pop it, the legs flex and move, thereby appears to be swimming? That was one thing I liked about the cork spiders I used as a kid, was their "swimming" action of the legs.

That is possible as I put them in too. I just need to put it in the water to see how it looks.

Good looking popper. I agree, the tail could be shorter, but I tie mostly trout flys. I think I would try without the legs, being you used hackle. Maybe one of each, with and without the legs. The colors look good. Nice work Skip.

I plan on trying several sizes and styles, like legs or not and hackle or not. Maybe longer hackle like a soft hackle for more of a leggy look. I am also going to do it in several colors including a frog pattern that I hope comes out like I think it will. Maybe even a hair/feather mix tail.

Lots to think about and try.

    Thanks,

So many choices! I like legs o.k. I seem to have better luck with lures with legs Have you tried them out yet? How's the actual fishing part of this addiction going?
What makes a better lightning rod than a graphite fishing rod? NOTHING!
