I had to cut the grass this morning and couldn’t get an early start .
I put some of the KastKing braid on my Shimano Soare BB 500spg reel and paired it up with a 6’3” Abu Garcia MB3 rod and was anxious to try it out .
The Town pond is the closest water , but this time of year it’s usually low and pretty yucky .
It didn’t disappoint.![]()
It was 87 with a heat index of 92 but a little breezy. I was hoping to fish the shaded side of the pond but the wind was blowing into that side and the water had a film that reached out to about 15-20’ , full of goose feathers too.
I stared at the mess for a few minutes and decided to see how long I could stand the heat of being exposed to the full sun on the other side .
I started off fishing a black trout magnet on a streamer hook/tungsten bead and if I timed the wind right was getting casts out past 50’ .
Without a nibble , I decided to try a micro spinner , mainly just to see if I could cast it far enough to fish it .
I had tied a small size 0 swivel to the braid and had a short 10-12” Floroclear leader in 4# .
I used a black Sharpie to dye the first foot or so of the yellow braid .
I was surprised on my second cast , once I got the braid wet again , I was casting around 40’ , about what I was casting 2# Floroclear.
On that second cast I got bump but missed, and saw a good size shellcracker swirl at the tiny spinner .
I fished about thirty minutes and caught four bluegills and one nice ultralight bass , all gave a good fight on the combo with the braid .
One of the bigger gills swam under the bridge where one had broken me off a few weeks ago . I could feel the line around the bridge post , but was able to free the gill and land it .
Two of the bluegills were pretty good size .
With me being a primarily bank fisherman, braid might be what I need. I can fish closer to cover without worrying about breaking off as much .
The heat started getting to me and I headed home to the AC .
