Temps got down below freezing last night after a too cold and windy day yesterday to go fishing .
The Sun was out today but with a temp in the upper 40’s and windy. 9mph with gusts to 19 .
But still better than yesterday.
So I waited until after noon and headed to the pond . I didn’t expect to catch much with last nights cold temps .
For the first half hour I threw a couple of in-line spinners I put together last night , but nothing went for them .
Spinners have to be retrieved at a speed to keep the blade turning and off the bottom , which I felt was too fast for the fish dealing with the cold water .
I switched over to a 1/32 jig and Sowbug Trout Magnet and on the second cast , caught my first fish of the day . A bass .
In the next hour I hooked six more bass and landed four total .
The TM seems to be a good cold water bait lately.
These are the three best , all caught on my 5’6” Daiwa Trout X UL paired with a Daiwa Legalis LT 1000d spooled with 6# Daiwa J8 Braid and a 4# Flouroclear leader .
This combo seemed perfect for fishing today . I’m beginning to like the Daiwa braid , with the braid and a 4# leader I’m able to lift and swing most of the small bass up the high bank on the dam side of the pond .
The wind not only made it tough fishing , but when I fished the shaded dam side of the pond , my hands got cold , even with my fingerless polar fleece gloves .
But it was worth it to get out.
