We have had it all three ways also. But seems like the best trip I can remember, we were catching a few, one about every 5-10 minutes then it started to rain and we couldn't pull them in fast enough, fishing jigs under corks and almost every cast the cork didn't have a chance to float, just kept going down. I guess they thought it was a bunch of baitfish busting he water, cause the harder it rained the better they would bite. We got two limits of 50 that day.
Best way to answer your question is "trial and error"

Got wet and spent a few hours pondering life. Pretty good day huh? A fella with a fly rod passed by and asked "Having any luck?" "Lucky to be out," I replied. I will try again later. Nery a bite or a nibble but had a good time.

I caught my first big bass in pouring down rain, and have done quite well at times in all stages of inclement weather. I really like the fishing during a thunderstorm, they bite very well for me then. I think it's the way the jig looks as I'm nervously twitching the graphite rod tip while the lightening hits around me. That's still pretty safe, right? As long as part of you is in the water?

NO. If you are touching the bottom you are grounded, which means fried!!!

Everyone knows that 'lectricity & water don't mix ;) ... and the safest place to be, during a thunder/lightning storm, is far away from the lake !!

And, just to be a little on the facetious side, myself ... I have an answer to your sig "question" --- a steel rod :eek: (which we, luckily, no longer have to use) :D
