Hit the tailrace knowing I was going to catch over a hundred chunky 8 inch bluegill. But that was not the case. As a matter of fact they were void of where they have always stacked up the past 4 years at this time. I did however find plenty of 7 inch fish on the opposite side of the river. The fish had an attitude for sure. I would fish one side of the river for a while...catching over 50 crappie with most being at the 11 inch mark with a few 12 inch fish in the mix and one 13.5 inch crappie. Kind of puzzling why no bluegill in their normal haunt. I used the Diplomat Extreme 6’ 2” UL and it made for a lot of fun. I also used the new Varivas ES2 Ester Lemoni line today. While the line is rated at 2.3# test it actually tests at 1.8# on my Bouz Drag Checker...and it is accurate. Varivas sent me a prepaid envelope to send one of the spools back to them and they are sending it to Japan for testing and will get back with me. This new polyester is a keeper line with none of the issues with the Neo Orange Ester. I have fished with it quite a bit and it behaves itself very well. I would like it to actually break at 2.3# though. Fishing a 1.8# test line is nerve wracking. But it held up very well for an epic battle with an 18 inch Spot...my personal best. The new ester really shines fishing for sunfish. Sooner or later those 8-9 inch Gills have to move onto the lay down.
