Few and Far Between

Been tough up here last couple weeks with the low water conditions, my creek fishing has all but dried up. The 67 degree weather this February afternoon encouraged me to at least go wet a line, cannot catch fish on the couch. No wind, no current, the creek now empties onto a shallow mud flat. In about 3ft of water I noticed a log with some small bass cruising around it. A possibility of a bite is all I need to pitch a small jig, so the Trout Magnet went to work. Normally if you can see shallow fish, they can see you and can be reluctant to bite......yep true tonight. No takers on two different colors of the Trout Magnet, Sowbug and Root Beer Float struck out, actually kind of scared the fish when I twitched them by the structure. I moved on down the bank into deeper water and still could not find a bite. Changed up to a Lunkerhunt Spade Grub and eased back down to the log, a little darker now (later in the evening) and when barely in casting distance I stuck one of the little rascals.

Fun, especially on the Corto with the ultra fine nylon. Couple casts later, my intended target, a Gill.

Small yes, but a fish no less. The lower light conditions in the shallow water improved the few bites I did get, and when I felt a huge thump I knew a fight was on. In 3ft the bigger fish usually head straight out for deep water, and this one did just that, taking drag at will. Turned her and got her coming my way, I finally touched the big female White Bass and she posed nicely for a couple shots.

Say Ahhh, let’s check for that tooth patch, Cherokee Lake has all 3 species of temperate Bass.

Yep, a nice White with a single tooth patch. The .117mm diameter Varivas 3lb. Monofilament held its own, but suffered a bad structure rash and needed a re tie. No more bites for the evening, but a short bank fishing trip on an unseasonably warm February afternoon was a welcome start to the week. Rain coming the next few days, going to get the new 19 Diawa Ballistic 1000 FW strung up and into action soon. Stay tuned.
