Extra cast distance

If I’m correct that rod has small eyes close to the reel and that doesn’t help. I have 2 kinds of 6lb braid and also don’t get the distance I need. IMHO you’re giving up a lot of contact adding the float as you suggest. I also use Nanofil in 2 and 4 lb and find that the 4lb cast a 1/16 a very long way. Folks talk of fire line crystal very well but I have yet to try it. Another vote for losing the float.

The less objects between you and the lure, the more sensitive to light strikes.
Kastking braid in 6 or 8# test casts further and is the most sensitive transmitter of light strikes IMO. It's 2 lb diameter allows the best lure action with far less line bow mono produces that deadens strike sensitivity. 1/24 oz. jigs are made heavier depending on the weight of the soft plastic lure attached.

I have 4# mono on my ultra light because I can't find 2# around here. Then again we don't get very big crappie's around here. If I though I could get them around 2# here, I'd just stick with 4#. Have no trouble casting small jigs far enough. If I don't think I'm getting far enough out, I move the boat closer!

For one thing, I'd be really concerned with using those ultra light jigs under a slip float. Unless you have a split shot above the jig (or a barrel swivel). Otherwise, the jig will get stuck inside the slip float tube.

The line you are using might be of concern as well, with casting. You want/need to go as light as possible with super light jigs you're using. Try 2# test Fireline Crystal with a 2# test fluorocarbon leader. Connect them together with the Alberto knot and you should be good to go. This fused braid has less resistance going though tiny rod guides than actual braided lines do, in my opinion. But it's all good as long as what you select gives you the confidence you need to get the job done. :)
