Back to the basics. I took yesterday off (needed a mental break) and went to my favorite Ozark stream and fished for smallmouth. I used a new to me rod that a good buddy basically gave me. A Favorite Rods Jackhammer. It is a 7’ medium action rod with a fast tip. He told me to use braid with it to maximize sensitivity. So I ordered up some Power Pro V2 8-lb braid and learned to tie on the leader with an FG knot. Man this rod setup with the Luvias 2004H is awesome for creek fishing. I opted for this rod because of the potential to tangle with trophy sized creek smallmouth. In hind site, it would have been a little more exciting with the BlueCurrent. I also used a new to me bait called a Niko Hellgrammite. The fish were hammering it. Like usual, I pack a backpacks with of gear and nearly fish with the same thing all day. I ended up catching over 50 fish with 40 being smallmouth. No real big ones. The creek was pretty low and the stretch I fished didn’t have any deep pools. I also caught some Longear Sunfish, Ozark Bass, and Green Sunfish. It was a great stress relieving day. I didn’t see anyone else on the creek until I was walking out. I attempted to make a video but my GoPro battery apparently is no longer holdings good charge. I saw longear sunfish beds everywhere in the shallow water but the pictures didn’t turn out very good due to the glare on the water. The cicadas sang all day and I even heard an Eagle (didn’t see it) and a turkey gobble! Yes, this isn’t the first time I have heard a turkey gobble on this creek in the middle of summer. I now feel mentally refreshed. Great day!
