Thread: What will bream do if...???

In an effort to restock a pond with bream, I caught a bunch from another pond and kept them in a 5 gallon bucket for transporting them to this pond. My question is if they were in the middle of spawning in the first pond and they had their beds made, will they just build another bed in their new pond assuming I caught them in time to do so and lay their eggs??? Or, will I have to wait till next year to see if they will spawn again. I have also heard that they sometimes spawn twice. Is this true?? Is it likely to happen with my bream??

They'll probably spawn in a while. Some people claim that a bluegill will spawn as many as 3 times a year, depending on the weather. Makes sense, ever catch a female without an egg sac in her?

I am no scientist and have no way of knowing if the same fish are spawning. But, I have caught bream spawning at least three different times of the year; blue gills that is. I only catch spawining redear about now or earlier. I have caught blue gill spawing at different times in the warmer months.

are not very likely to attempt to spawn in their new surroundings (just yet) ... but, should revert to their normal spawning habits, once they've become accustomed to their new "home".
Bluegill will spawn from March to September, in most Southern states, and year around in Florida ... once the water temps reach 70deg's (and maintain a 70-75deg temp range) ... and usually during the Full Moon time span of those months (loosely considered as sometime during the week before and following the date of the Full Moon).

Best scenario ... ALL of the "bream", that you are transporting, are Bluegill -- and not Green Sunfish, or other "sunfish" species. It would also be of great benefit, if there were large Bass and/or Catfish already established in this pond. A large length of bank, with shallow water and a mud bottom would be an ideal spawning area ... scattered wood cover, or sparse water weeds/plants would also be a benefit.

Thanks folks, You're right Crappiepappy, we had some green sunfish in the pond next to this one. They were a real blast to catch, they always outgrew the redear sunfish in the pond with them. I just might stock that pond with them when the time comes to start work on cleaning it out. It's already been drained and I've been lurking here for some ideas on structure to fish around and a proper bedding place for the green sunfish. lots of ideas to mull over in my mind while I wait. As I said in another post the water temp is at a steady 60 degrees now, we'll see what happens when the temperature gets right. Wish me luck.:D

To each his own, but I wouldn't stock green sunfish. Some green sunfish and bullhead catfish got into my 18 acre lake some how and it is hard to get them out.

It's a personal decision based upon your preferences and goals; but I'd go with straight bluegill and redear. You can double check with biologist types over on pondboss.com.
