I've always called them "Rock Bass" or big mouth perch, never seen one bigger than 6".
Some of the best eatin panfish there is! There are many names for the warmouth depending on which part of the country you live in,
rock bass - northern (yankee) term :D
google eye - ? don't know where that originates from
molly, or mawmouth - south carolina
warmouth - general south
have caught some approaching 2lbs. in the Lake Okeechobee basin and suspect a new record will come from the Harney Pond canal area of Okeechobee. A good place to catch some biguns is under the SR78 bridge at Harney Pond canal.
I use them for trotline hook hold downs, and also eat a few.

In our area a similar fish is more common . It is a green sunfish which is more likely in a pond.http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/wildlife/...d/grnsnfsh.htm
They sure make good Flathead bait too .
Not a cross breed.Them things can be fun. They do eat lots of little fish. With the larger mouth they can eat larger fish then say a blue gill can.JMO
MinnowSoaker is right. We 'Yanks" from up North call them Rock Bass. They have saved many a day for me when the Bass/Walleye/Crappie/Bluegill's would not bite. My largest ones have always come on a moving lure like a small jig, beatle spin, or small spinnerbait. Shalllow, hard bottom or sand flats at Dawn/Dusk, & just after dark have been the best times for me. If I get into a bunch of them, I break out my 40+ year old rods/reels and have some fun.
I've caught a ton of em in my 50+ years of fishing but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
