I realized that after seeing this. In winter I made up tungsten bead chironomid fly patterns to fish as a dropper off my regular tungsten ice jigs.
They worked well they live in the mudd and are bright deep red and a swimmers.
I have caught panfish through the ice that there whole mouth was full of red chironomids.
Now I need to see which red powder paint to go with.
Like other have said, black, brown, olive, also red.
I always thought the red/orange simulated the colors of a spawning bluegill and irritated them enough to strike.
I do much better with the natural colors than the bright neons for most panfish.
plain lead head, red thread, black for the top and yellow chart for the bottom, with a pink crappie nibble, fished under a small float.
Bitter's has the bream killers you speak of. Black head with natural squirrel tail. Two different sizes

I still sit her wondering how come there are "plastics" that are coming out in 150 different colors a year? LOL
