I use a very sensitive UL rod so I can always feel the jig...it is only 1/64 but I will also at times use a size B split shot. I count down to where I think they are and then very slowly retrieve it back while I have the rod rocking in an almost slow rocking chair rhythm never losing the feel of the jig head. If you lose the feel of the jig head it is going too fast. I always keep the line taught so I can maintain the feel of the jig......I am constantly turning the reel handle albeit very slow to maintain the tension.

I work my tip pretty fast but barely shake it while reeling and do great on trout and so so on gills maybe I need to slow it down more for them?

I do the same as you for trout....but use the slow cadence method on Gills and crappie.
