For Gills I almost always use Bison...which is black and gold....on a black TM head....and only use 2# test line and sometimes 1# test. I fish a lot of lakes, and catch a lot of Gills.....that color out produces any color I have used. I find Gills prefer darker colors....at least on the lakes I fish. Those include clear, deep water reservoirs, and small shallow lakes and rivers.Quote:

The 2" are all I have used. I use a plain jig head with a hook size no larger than #6, and a 1/32 oz. head. A heavier head makes the jig sink too fast which in turn necessitates a retrieve that is too fast for bluegill. I fish it with a medium-slow steady retrieve, experimenting with different depths until I find where they're hanging.
Live bait as a rule outfishes any lure, Sliders included, but the Crappie Sliders are, in my experience, the next best thing to live bait. The biggest bluegill caught by any of my clients this year, a coppernose estimated at 1-3/4 pounds by a prominent outdoor writer on ****************, was caught on a black 2" Crappie Slider with a chartreuse tail.

Ive tried small 1/6 and 1/8 oz spoons tipped with plastics. Never caught a gill on one but id watch them following it back to shore. Not sure if it was the plastic trailer or the flash of the spoon that was attracting them. Im guessing the spoon.

Eagle 1, that is a SERIOUS mess of fish. WOW. Thanks for the info on the Sliders, but did you mean 1 1/2 inch? The Slider website doesn't show any grubs that are 1/2 inch long. Or are you fishing something beside grubs? And do you mean that they are solid black? PS. My oldest son earned his master's degree in Starkville. I'm enjoying seeing the Bulldogs play well this year!

Our family does very well with the BPS Tournament Series Squirmin' Squirt tubes in the 1.5 inch length. I usually put them on a 1/32 - 1/8 oz round jig head depending on conditions and depth. Aberdeen or sickle hook jigs are both fine but I favor the sickle type. The tubes are relatively cheap at 1.99 for 15. For 12 bucks you can get 6 different colors and they last a while. We've caught gills, pumpkinseed, bass, crappie, yellow and white perch, even caught a carp on one. You can cast, jig or even hang them under a bobber. Tip them with crappie nibbles and they are great! I like them for panfish because they are fairly short. Several other plastics we have tried tend to have a longer tail and we get a lot of short strikes, the tubes seem to work better and for me the 1.5 inch length helps get more hook ups. Lightning Bug, Lady Bug, Melon Gold Shiner and Smoke Sparkle are colors we have very good luck with.

Won't go fishing without them and in that color or pearl. (handpoured / no mold) Use with 1/16 - 1/8 oz ball head jigs, slow to medium retrieve. Baits are no longer than 2 3/4" and no smaller than 2".

Check the soft plastics by Snake River contact information ormy soft plastics LURES BY CARTER both are members here on c.com and make excellent lures for Bream, Shellcracker and Crappie.
I would recomment little squirts by Shipahoy41 or the jelly jigs. Place those on the teardrop and get your hot sauce ready.
