    Default best from today

I fished a couple hours today at one of my weaker bluegill ponds - kept a bunch of females, let this one go:

Is that a fiberglass rod lying on the ground?

I agree with TPM on the 8ft rod for gillin. I have a Wally Marshall ultralite signature and can use it to cast small jigs or fish with a bobber. That leverage does help when you need to turn them quickly. Might get a custom made rod in the future.

It is indeed a fiberglass rod - an 8' spinning rod made on a 5-weight Lamiglas fly rod blank, to be specific, with a true Tennessee handle (the reel is affixed with electrical tape).

Yes, a limber rod greatly adds to the enjoyment of the fight. Although, conversely, the extra length also provides a good bit of additional leverage, which comes in handy on big ones like this. He tried to hang me up in about three different fallen trees, and probably would have succeeded against a short rod.
