Help out a northern guy. Looks like a couple of bluegill (I can see the vertical bars) just under the ruler, but what are the really dark fish on the left?
This spring I've been boating a bunch of dark 'gills like that but the shape is just a bit different; very bullish head shape with very little snout. I've been looking for some side by side comparison photo's of your basic bluegill, shell crackers (I don't think we have them here in CT), yellow breasts.
Most of my really dark fish were caught during the spawn from early May through mid June.
All of them were bluegills with the exception one white perch, the water has a lot of tannic acid in it from the cypress trees. The older / bigger fish are darker , it varies with which river they are from. Caught some bluegills at Kerr Lake and they looked "pale" compared to those from the rivers.
Always love seeing those hugh bull gills.Thumbs Up Congrats on a great catch.![]()
Thanks for the info. I thought they might be 'gills but wanted to be sure they weren't some variation I was unaware of. I thought that might be a white perch by the shape but I've never caught one. The dark ones I got in to this spring were big, around a pound and a bit for the most part according to my partners digital scale. Thanks again for the clarification. Ken
