You can probably take all you would want to eat and never put a dent in their numbers. Like others said you would actually be helping to grow bigger fish by thinning the herd some. Try some meal worms if you can get them around there. Take one of your beat up grubs and pinch offf tail then tip with meal worm.
I sometimes use the rebel cricket popper in yellow and the darker brown color. That ends up being alot of fun catching the sunnies and smallies on it. I'll have to try several of these tips... I think I started thinking about the river early this year because I've just about skipped my usual trout fishing where its been so pretty and warmed up so fast. I guess I need to work on catching some of these trout they have been stocking first LOL :D I will for sure try what you guys are saying here in month or so. I got my order in from Jan's Netcraft to make some beetle spin type lures and I got the wire shafts to make my own rooster tails. If they don't look like complete crap I'll post some pics when I get done with them...

Get yourself a couple two or three Roadrunners in the 1/32 & 1/16oz size ... solid chartreuse is as good as any. Cast them in the areas where you are finding the Redbreast, Smallies, or whatever ... even in your Trout waters, if legal to use.
You can also try a Pop-eye jig, tipped with a wax worm, under a float. Cabin Creek makes the Pop-eye jig that I'm most familiar with, but there are others. Here's an old thread on them : http://www.crappie.com/crappie/main-...peye-jigs.html

i have fished on and off for bluegill and shellcracker(redear). never used artificial bait. i prefer crickets as they are less messy, but worms are much more preferred by shellcrackers here on wheeler lake.i dont think bluegills have a preference. i only fish when these fish are bedding and really dont know all the different species of bream other than the 2 i mentioned.
Down south alot shellcracker fishermen and women where i fish use a little piece of redworm.Me i use crickets cause they less messy.
Rig I use for shellcrackers (redear) is drop shot, with worms. Keep small bluegills, throw 8.50" and over back, so you have some monsters to catch
