    Default Can shellcrackers really crack shells?


    Really, I don't see how they could. They don't look all that much different from gills, and I don't think a bluegill could crack any shells. Besides, what kind of shells are they supposed to crack anyway?
    Sometimes the magic works, and sometimes...oh well, it was a nice day at the lake.

    Actually, Cartman .... YES, they can crack shells. They have crusher plates in their throat, that they use to crush snail shells & other shelled critters.

    Yes in my local lakes redear feed on freshwater clams(Lopez lake, Cachuma lake) also i've read they make a clacking sound with those crushers during spawning season

    They also can mash up smaller hard crayfish and water beatles into pulp...
