    Default Fishing report 5-6-11

This is for all of you who are retired, had today off, or woke up this morning too sick to go to work (but not too sick to go fishing!)
    What did you catch today?
I went out to Bowling Lake, here in Lincoln, Ne. It's not a very big lake. It's out by the airport. It was WINDY!! I don't know what the wind speed was, but it had to be a steady 25mph, with even higher gusts.
I caught three bluegills, maybe around 6" each. I also had something else on the line once. I don't know what it was but it put up a good tussle! It shook the hook before I could land it, though!
Two of the bluegills, and the mystery fish, were caught on this:
Bill Lewis Tiny Trap Rat L Trap
    (Only mine has treble hooks!)
The first bluegill struck that thing before I could even close the bail and start to reel it in! I'm glad he hooked himself, cause I didn't even have time. He was on that thing before I knew it! And........
That is the first time I have ever caught a fish on an artificial lure!
As Grover would say "Oh, I am so PROUD of me!"
The last bluegill was caught elsewhere on the lake using a hook, sinker, and bobber with a small piece of cheesy polish sausage for bait. (Yes, I am a 'kitchen" fisherman!) It took about 15 seconds after it hit the water for that bluegill to hit it!
By that time it was so windy it was almost impossible to stand, and the fish had stopped biting, so I came home. Not a bad day, all in all.
I did find out that the 6'6" medium action UglyStik I have isn't suited too well for those small lures, though.
Hmmm... Father's Day is coming up, isn't it?

Sounds like you had a better fishing day than me. I was up in Omaha early this morning before the wind picked up, picked up a few white perch with some spinners. Had to run some errands all day then laid down for a bit before i went back out around 5pm. Wind was crazy at that time so i was a little unsure which side of the lake i wanted to fish at with a Southeasterly wind with gusts up to 30mph. Finally decided to to sit on the south side and cast with the wind rather than against it. Didn't get any hits for about 2 hours then i packed it up and went home. Busy day tomorrow, might try to squeeze in some fishing since the winds will be much lighter.

It is polish sausage with bits of cheddar cheese in it. Sort of like the cheddarwurst sausages you buy off the roller grills at the convenience stores. Fish love the stuff. (So do I!) You can get it at the supermarket in the meat case. I suppose regular polish sausage would work OK, too. The scent really travels underwater. Cut it up into cubes about 3/16". It works pretty good.

Yea, it was pretty bad today. I stayed on the south side of the lake as well. It seems like every time I can get out to a lake, it's as windy as Boeing's wind tunnel! Maybe I have offended the fishing gods somehow?
I have things I have to do tomorrow. I won't get out Sunday, either. Hopefully the weather will be good next Saturday. I promised my daughter I'd take her fishing then. My son will be at a Boy Scout camp-out, so it will be a daddy-daughter day.

Pawnee Lake isn't too far from the Lincoln Airport, have you thought about fishing over there?

If i can't get out this weekend, I'll have Monday and Tuesday to look forward too, upper 80's and light winds before a cold front blows through on Wednesday, perfect!

I've been over to Pawnee, but haven't made it there this season yet. The north side of the lake is the shallow end, the south end is about 20" deep. It's a nice place to go, though.
