    My dad used to make his own floats and used them just like these porcupine floats. He used polar wood and would spend whole afternoons wittling them down. I never realized he was trying to copy porcupine floats.

    In that light can you make these out of balsa wood using dowels about half the width of a ink pen, maybe paint tip neon green or orange just for visibility?

    Yep. You can also make them out of a straw from McDonald's. Just plug the ends with epoxy or something similar.
