The bluegill and redear have started nesting on my home lake here in central Indiana and I took a break from bass and crappie fishing to chase them today. Ended up catching nearly 100 fish today, most of them bluegills with a few redear thrown in, along with about 2 dozen crappie. Bluegill were running mostly 8"-9.5" but did get a few larger including the 11" redear in the pic. Seems like the redear were spawning in a little deeper water than the gills, and the redear were on more clay or sand/shell bottom where the bluegill seemed be be mostly sandy areas with some gravel mixed in.
Everything was caught on 1/22-oz. curlytail jigs today fished on 2.5# Toray fluorocarbon line and a 6'6" ML spinning rod - a total blast! Guessing they'll stick around for another week or so before moving out, so might have to do this again. Hoping to keep the gill fishing good in this lake, so released everything I caught today to do again another time.

Nice fish.

Nice fish! Especially for Indiana. I grew up in Marion, and gills/crackers like that were uncommon.
Good job! Pond or lake?
Do gooder since April 26, 2009!
Ok, let me clarify.
I meant Northcentral IN, where I grew up. All soybeans and corn. I do know that some of the reservoirs have improved since I moved. (1985 or so)
It still just doesn't compare to the fishing here in VA. (No offense intended, I'll always be a Hoosier) :D

Nice catch ! forget the bass ! catch some more of those gills.....
Nice looking fish! Went to waveland Sat. Had to contend with three consecutive Bass tournaments. My son and I still brought home 47 nice Gills.
