    Question Night Crawlers

Does anyone know how effective night crawlers are on bluegill and redear. The main question is are crawlers too big. I plan on using just pieces of them not the whole crawler. Last year when the redear started to hit on Ky Lake, I had trouble finding any decent size earthworms. So this year I thought I would pick up some night crawlers on a good wet spring night. My yard is loaded with them succers (and the moles know it to). And it looks like tonight may be the night to pick up several dozen with all the rain we have had today.

We use nightcrawlers 99.9 percent of the time and catch bluegills, shellcrackers, bass etc...... fish them under slip bobbers , cut them into 3 or 4 pieces depending on their length , I`ve seen them "outfish" minnows ...............
    hope this helps Pat NENC

Very effective. You can catch almost anything in freshwater on nightcrawlers.

    Default Here's the bait!

Well it rained all day yesterday, so I thought the night crawlers would come out last night and they did. After about an hour I probably ended up with 7 or 8 dozen crawlers. The bait is in the refrigerator and doing well. Hopefully, they will get acquainted with some big ole bluegill and redear on Ky Lake this spring.

Here's what I picked on the first trip through the yard.

They are great but a bear to raise and keep. I catch just as many Bream and Shellcrackers on Red Wigglers plus you can breed and keep them more easily.

1/3 to 1/2 a nightcrawler seems to be more effective than a redworm to me for bluegill. I use #6 Aberdeen hooks.

Walmart sells 20 nightcrawlers for $2.96. I usually buy a tub, then take them out of their original container, and transfer them into a half gallon styrofoam "crawler carrier" loaded with moistened Buss Worm Bedding. Then I put a layer of wet newspaper on top of this and let them fatten up a few days. It helps tremendously.

I hate paying for nightcrawlers!!!!!!!!! I'll get out and catch my own and they seem better than the store bought ones. Only one thing I'd do and DON"T put any broken pieces in the main worm container put them in a separate container or you could have one heck of a mess.

i collect my own crawlers. i will not pay for them when me and the kids can pick up several hundred every time it rains. i throw them in a 5 gallon bucket with some worm bedding and they go in the garage fridge. (the wife wont let me keep bait in her kitchen anymore) i add a little water to the bedding when it starts to dry out and pick out the dead ones once a week.

i use a 1/2" chunk on a #6 aberdeen under a slip bobber for bluegill.
