heading down to the big E

think i will be heading to the crowder or gaines area for a couple of days starting wednesday. can any of you guys tell me how the catch is going on right now? any info would be greatly appreciated! hope to see some of you guys pulling in those slabs while i am there.

I would watch the weather.....the water temp in Gaines is running about 57 to 60.....if we have 2 to 3 days of 70+ and the nights warmer than 57...then I would head down.....and fish shallow....but if the weather stays cold....like today.....i would plan to fish a little later in the month...

The water temps wont drop off as much when the sun has a chance to work on it for a couple days, case in point; Sat. we fished the front end of a cove and it was like ice! Moved in towards the back about 50 yards and BAM! It had to be 10 degrees difference at least. Concentrate on banks that receive more evening sunlight and your in business.

My son and I are going to fish Eufaula tomorrow. I am trying to decide where to fish. I had originally planned to fish the Belle Starr dock, because I figured the water had cooled off, but it sounds like you all (and others) are getting some shallow. My other option is to put in my mini-boat somewhere down there. My knowledge of Eufaula by boat is minimal. It looks like the winds are going to be light enough tomorrow to put the boat in, where would you suggest I launch that is close to good water since I just use trolling motors?

I will suggest Juniper point since its a Penninsula and you can fish the north or south side depending on which way the wind direction dictates. Plus theres alot of brushy areas accesible by a 2 man boat.....hope this helps.

I think I found it on the map (Found Bunny Creek Rd. anyway, so I assume that's Bunny Creek it crosses), do you, or anyone who happens to read this, know if there is a ramp of any kind near that bridge?

No ramp they just back in off the bank, if you dont get *)($#!@& in your neck it can be done, as it's a hard bank / bottom there, I used to turn right at the bridge & follow that little road down to the water.

pj, I fished at Crowder today and only caught one dink. But there was a steady stream of slabs swimming under the culbert. Large schools of them. 50-75 in a group. But try as I may, I couldn't get them to bite minnows or jigs.

I believe they were moving to the other side of hwy 69 with one thing on their minds, finding shallow water in order to start spawning. They'll bite after they start bedding down.

One guy found a shallow spot in a narrow passageway just south of the ramp and he caught a couple of pretty good males. I didn't want to crowd in on him, so just talked a while and moved on.

I think you'll do fine if you can find a shallow spot, anchor down, fish, fish, and fish some more. If they don't bite at that spot, move down the shoreline a ways and repeat it all again. You'll get into them if you keep trying.
