Thread: Colored Hooks

I think we have a good idea what many think about painting their jig heads. Now what is everyone's take on using colored hooks, particularly red. It is my understanding that red is one of the first colors to disappear or fade out to a dark color in deep water. It is further my understanding that this happens by 10 feet. Let's hear some discussion on this topic.

I like sickle hooks regardless of the color.

Boy, you have that right. I really like the sickle hooks. although I just bought a bunch of double barbed jig hooks

Red is just a coating over a bronze hook. Both will rust. I prefer a black chrome sickle for this reasonas it won't rust.

agree. Red will also wear or chip off - probably doesn't hurt but it looks cheap. I prefer black nickle sickle (but use about anything just like my colored or non-colored heads.)

I used Red for a long time then switched to Black Nickle. Can't tell any real difference in catch ratio. Some guys swear the get bit more on red. I do put red hooks on my crank baits.

I prefer sickles, and red sickles also, I do think the red is for the fisherman and still buy them! Dr nip as fast as I loose them I don't have to worry about the red wearing off!

I used to fish strictly red for the longest and just recently switched to black this year.

Just got me batch of the Eagle Claw Lil Nasty sickle hooks in red and will start using them!! Goodbye Matzuo.

Another reason I use black chrome is they are cheaper than red hooks to purchase if you are pouring your own jigs.

LOL, well that might change Redge now that you have started pouring your own weedless jigs. Red is pretty but it is pure marketing in my opinion. I don't have problems with hooks rusting because I let the jig dry out before sticking it back in the box unless, of course, when I leave it firmly fixed to a tree.

Well here goes guys. I am old school and never used the sickle hooks nor do I have a desire too really. Eagle Claw 570 and never smaller than a #2. I have lost so many good fish on small hooks that all those small hooks are good for is well nothing. I know it's an opinion and they are line backsides we all have one.......Now as far as color it doesn't matter to me but if I am buying by bulk to pour it's a black nickle or bronze......Ranger
