Ok, I know where you live
Welcome back Leland! As for braid, I used it on two custom rods that Leland made for me specifically for tightline jiggin. Drag is set so that if I get hung up, I wrap the braid around the handle a couple of times, position the rod tip towards the water and either pull the jig out or break the line without putting any undue stress on the rod itself. Both rods have broken, one due to my ignorance of closing a livewell lid on it the night I picked it up from Leland. The other was stepped on by another person in my boat that weakened the last eye and the tip and I didn't find out until the first time I set the hook on a fish and the crushed area of the graphite collapsed. I used my dikes to clip the damaged portion of the rod off and have been using it like that ever since. Even damaged, it's my favorite go-to rod for verticle jigging.
Leland, let me know if you start building again. I'd sure like to have one that's had your touch on it with no outside adjustments from live wells and friends.
As for braid cutting the rod creating damage, those of us who use braid dang well know how often it will tie a half hitch out of nowhere on the tip area of the rod. Drag settings will not help if this is the case. If the user does not notice the half hitch, and tries to set the hook, or break off of brush, the braid is going to damage the rod if the pressure is hard enough. Thus, a half hitch causing damage would be customer error for not noticing the issue and putting undue stress on their equipment.
There are those who will man up and admit the real reason a rod broke and there are those who will cry and whine about their rod breaking when it was their fault to begin with. Not saying there are not defective rods out there. I once had a B&M I bought from Nabatak and within the first couple of hooksets, the thing broke in half near the coupler. Nabatak traded me out with no issues. If I would have damaged the rod somehow, my conscience would not allow me to return it. Right is right, and wrong is wrong fellers!
You said it all Reaper!
You on the money Reaper!! Right Is right, and wrong is wrong!
Hey Reaper, how you been up there? I'm still tinkering around with rods I'll make rods until the day I'm gone I guess. Send me a pm or call me either way....u got my number?
Leland, do you still sell rods?
I'm with Odie and the guys who support cheaper rods, braided line, and proper drag setting. If you don't have some already, get the Depth Hunter Power Pro. It is a braid with color coded marks that give you absolute depth control, without tying on strings or using magic markers. It is available on eBay at several sites. I use a small swivel tied to the braid with a Palomar knot, and add one or two 4 pound mono leaders. Otherwise I would be shortening my braid every time I put on a new jig.
Alternatively, you COULD tie loops in the braid and change jigs without cutting any braid. And the braid will straighten or break any jig hook you use if it gets hung in the brush or other lines.
Dont want to cook your grits, but what # braiad do you use? Most of the cdc members dont use a leader ( cant speak for all) whats the abvantage? I tie jigs on with a triple tied loop knot and if I cant bow & arrow it loose normally the hook will straighten. We kept a journal on lost jigs one year and only lost 5 total......and that's no fish story.
I use the 10/2 Depth Hunter. I don't know why, but I like using the leaders instead of the loops. I have four rods, so I can switch colors and jig sizes without retying. I have been planning on tying the way you described for two of the rods. My previous post described the same advantage that you pointed out. The only problem comes if the jig head gets wedged in the rocks or whatever, and you have to break the braid. That shortens your Depth Hunter, and you have a line where the markers are not true, unless you cut it off at the next 25 foot marker.
I used to use a leader with braid but rarely do any longer, especially for Crappie. I sometimes use the loop knot and sometimes use fas-snaps just because I like to switch jig head colors sometimes. With the fas-snap I just tie it into the loop and can snap on or off the heads. I still use a flouro leader sometimes when fishing for other more spooky species. When I use a single jig I sometimes just clip off an inch or so of the braid and retie the head. Keeps the end of the line fresh.
You guys that break hooks and having trouble hanging up in brush need to invest in some BoneHead Stick Guards......Ranger
I'll have to admit that I have tied the loop knots and straightened some hooks when using braid without the leader. And they can only be bent back so many times before breaking. I HAVE lost more jigs when using the leaders. Maybe that's why I use them. It gives me more reason to tie up a lot of jigs, rather than try to find something on the boob tube.
Get some Bonehead stick guards and STOP losing your jigs like Ranger said.
Mosts of my serious hangups come from hooksets. If the stick guards help from hanging on a hook set, then it can cause a missed fish. Most light hangups will just fall off or get on through the brush for me. It's all in the touch.
Lip, I have had some problem with the triple loop "with braid" when double dippin. The top knot, when bottom jig gets hung, will pull down to jig head. Have you ever had this issue?
I tried Power Pro braid again today jigging at dock. I swear never again!!!
Try bonehead braid. I got on my rod for about a month or more and it is way better. I does not really wrap around the tip.
Oh, try the bonehead. Please try the Bonehead!
It is like a thread gets around rod, jigs and bird nest if other fisherman's fish gets into your line. I have also used the Power Pro slick and can not recommend it either. Spend your money on high priced braid or replacing some jigs or try the crappie stick to keep from hanging up.
Hmm never tried power pro on a spinning setup let alone crappie fishing but have used it on my baitcaster bass setup and never had any problems. I will be getting some bonehead soon though.
I'm convinced about the Bonehead stick guards. Now I have to convince my bookkeeper/money controller (aka the wife nonono) that I should be allowed more than $5 per month for fishing gear. :biggrin
Ranger, I've tried those hook gaurds before......unless they re-engineered em I lost more fish than I caught.
I use braid for just about everything not too much for straightening hooks when hung up but because I have confidence in it bringing fish in when I hook into bigger fish. My big thing that I find is a pain with it is if the wind is blowing very hard it seems to whip allot causing less sensitivity in the line. Even vertical fishing on windy days I try to hold rod tip close to water to avoid this. Anyone else feel like this is an issue in comparison to mono or is this all in my head?
Jig head weight or bell sinker weight is the key for me in wind. The heavier the better to mitigate wind whip and maximize sensitivity has been my experience.
If I'm fishing up to nine feet down and the wind is blowing, I use a bobber, which cuts down on the wind whip, puts action on the jig as the waves lift and sink the bobber, and it is a whole lot easier to detect a bite.
Some good ideas and have tried it some guess I will have to experiment more. Was recently into a walleye bite were the ticket was to pick the jig up and let it fall on a long cast retrieve and the wind was kicking my butt using the braid compared to what my buddy was getting with the mono. He did have the head of the boat allwing him to face the wind rather than having a cross wind like I had which could make a big difference too. Am thinking about trying to drop shot fish in this scenario next time.
