Ok I just have to jump in here. Redge you crack me up but there is alot of truth in what you say. I fished Bass Tournaments for years and you have to drive the hook thru plastic into the fishes mouth. Same principal in Crappie Fishing. Reason I went to a 6' rod and that's my shortest rod in my boat. All you have done is down size your equipment for Crappie. SET THE HOOK #1 RULE.
#2 for me is use a bigger hook on your jigs. I had trouble losing bigger fish from using. #4 hook in my 1/16oz jigs from pulling out. Fixed that problem by going to the bigger #2 hook in the same mold. 1/16oz is the smallest jig I use readon being I can't put a bigger hook in the molds I have.
#3 is the deeper you fish the more stretch you have in a mono style line so you either have to JERK HARDER or go to braid. Just my $.02 worth.......Ranger

Ok I forgot #4 and that's no wimpy rods. I do not fish a Ultra Light Rod Period. Reason being you can't get a solid hook set. Light Action in a Falcon 6' is light enough. The 7' BoneHead Rods are light action but are somewhat stiffer than the Falcon. Even in a 10' rod I don't use anything UL cause you can't turn the head on a big fish with it before he gets tangled up in brush. I hate wimpy rods cause of the frustration they cause me. Get a few rookies in your boat fishing wood with wimpy rods and you are trying to get hung fish out of wood all day. Again it's an opinion and we all have them...Ranger

If any of you have ever fished with Lip-ripper, you will understand how he chose his nickname. He jerks so violently on the rod that the line to the water makes a sound similar to a jet fighter doing a low fly by. And yes, he will jerk a lip clean off occasionally, but I will pay good money to see him set the hook. I've tried to copy his style, but its impossible for me to react that quickly and set the hook hard enough to pull up a 55 gallon drum of lead from the bottom.

x2 on the light rod. I bought an ultra light and thought I liked it until my next light rod. I never touch the ultra light anymore.

What knot are you using on the jigs? We use Pro Angler Tackle crappie Jigs (http://www.proanglertackle.com/CrappieHooks.htm). "Matzuo sickle hooks feature the latest in manufacturing technology,
hi-carbon wire, heat treating, plating, design, and chemically sharpened needle points.
These are among the strongest and sharpest hooks you will find anywhere.
Matzuo's sickle shape provides a stronger hook with less chance of losing your fish once hooked". Using a McNally Loop Knot (DownLoad "Knot Wars" on you iPhone free. Has on phone short videos on how to tie almost every knot out there. We have hooked all of our crappie 100% of the time in the roof of the mouth regardless of size and have never lost one at any depth using those jigs and that knot. Using a 5'6" Fenwick one piece UL with braid in the docks. We will go to 8' and 10' rods when in the boat with the same set up for line and jigs. I will not use any other jig. Hope that helps.

I'm just going to add to everyone's comments. My 5' BuCoo UL is restricted to stocker trout and 2lb flouro. Like Ranger my 6' BuCoo is the wimp of my bunch. My rods are more of a medium action with fast tip and I do set the hook like I did in the Red Man tourneys years ago. I use mono, flouro and braid depending on the situation but for deep fishing it's usually braid (or flouro.) I also like bigger hooks.
