Every time I stop the truck to ask for details on a fish for sale I get the same story. Speared it free diving or caught on a handline using squid for bait. Tomorrow we are buying two rods to go with my Calcutta reels and we will fish the docks while waiting for the ferry to pick us up and deliver us to Siquijor Island, about two hours away. This beautiful place where the mountains start as soon as you drive off the boat is known locally for its long history of witches and voodoo among the remote mountain villages. I know they make love potions but at my age and marital status I really am more in need of a potion that attracts big fish so wish me luck. When we sack em on Friday with our modern equipment and us dressed like movie stars I am pretty sure we will be signing autographs so I picked up a sharpie just in case.
Skunked last Friday by the ferry. Tried shrimp, sardines, and hotdogs and dropped em right into visible schools of fish who must have all been vegetarians. I did draw a big crowd of dock "workers" who were very encouraging. Next time I guess I will go native which is no hook. They just take flour and water and roll it on the mono to look like a white worm and it works. As a dumb American Okie I just assumed it was because they could not afford a hook or bait that made em fish like that but I can adapt. Anyway- 40' of water with fish suspended at 5-10', 20' visibility and 84 water temp.
Wow Ciller, that's some clear water, you'll get them next time. At least that's what I tell myself!
Dang it George I can't believe you have already forgot everything I taught you. LOL . Keep your head up and might think about a native guide for a day or two to get you back in the grove. Lol. Miss Ya .......Ranger
Oh and Merry Christmas Brother
Concerning Keystone. Butch said just a suggestion, to wait longer on the Keystone tournament. Just suggesting.
You're right Mark and talk about beggin em to bite! When I looked down there and watched a school of fish studying my bait it kind of paralyzed me and all I could think to do was switch baits three times and depths a few times then I went to the other side of the pier. Two guys have offered to take me out with them in their two man dugouts to handline bottom fish using squid for bait. I am trying to figure out how to do it without being caught by my wife. It seems she objects to my leaving at midnight to go to an unknown location about 20 miles away on roads and trails. Then I will climb on top of a shallow dugout about 18" wide and paddle out a few hundred yards to fish for five hours by moonlight. I haven't seen a life jacket since I left oklahoma. Maybe God invented wives to save fishermen from themselves but it sounds like something I really need to do so I'm working on it . Since they will eat every bit of everything we catch I figure its part of my mission to help out here in any way I can. Yep, I think that's my best approach to Mary. Wish me luck.
Ciller now that's sounds like an adventure!! Middle of the night, 20 miles from nowhere, and your helping feed the people! Don't worry about the PFD, I'm sure the waters nowhere near 50 degrees like here. Therefore hypothermia is of minimal worry, unless your in the water for to long, you do know how to swim I'm sure being an Okie and all. Have fun life is short!
I am lol that WW and Hester are stumbling around in a daze and have somehow wandered onto my already disjointed thread where nobody has caught a crappie for over four months! Then you guys appear and start randomly discussing the Keystone Tournament! I don't know how this happened but please, don't stop now. It's not only entertaining it is also the closest my thread has come to c.c relevance since its inception! Thank you so much- really. I just apologize that I have no opinion on the best time to hit Keystone. I went there once to get soundly thrashed by the Woodster and I am still trying to recover from the trauma.
