When I lived down there I fished the Longtown area lots, occasionally around I40, some around Crowder, and then far south. One area that I have never Crappie fished is in the area from Standing Rock Mountain to the dam. I know that's an area that several people have said they have trouble patterning the Crappie in. Single pole jigging is my favorite but I'm going to try to teach this old dog some new tricks. One is pushing crankbaits thru Shad schools. Any helpful hints (of any technique) would be appreciated from those of you that fish that area. I just like to fish in pretty water some.

Yeah, I gave up on that. I have hit it 5 or so times, have never done well. Once this year I took the boat on a ride around the horn and went halfway to the dam. Found a nice cove on the north side with standing timber and caught little ones right on the surface eating mayflies, no bigger fish and it was awesome habitat.

Well, I'm sure that where there are little ones there are also biggun's. I'm guessing there are more Blacks there which means clearer water usually. If I really need Crappie for my freezer I'll probably drive south but for pleasure fishing I think I'll try this area. Smallmouth would be a bonus.

I spent 10 days this spring around the Brooken Cove area. We did really well, of course that was this spring. I have some coordinates if you want. I have just started pulling cranks myself. Have caught crappie everytime I have pulled cranks. Don't know if that's of any help, if you have questions let me know.

Seriously, no advice. But, I would be very interested in what you learn in that part of the lake with such techniques.

I've pulled cranks successfully elsewhere but don't do it much. Once up in Kansas a friend had to wake me up to tell me I had a fish on (nice Walleye.) I had rather pull jigs than cranks but I have heard of several people on the main forum that push cranks and that is what I plan on trying, as well as working the shad. I'm basically open to anything - even been known to use a minnow for two (but not in the last few years.) I get to the lake a couple times a month for 4-5 days - keep a travel trailer down there. I'll be down the 10th thru 15th but plan on spending time south this trip. I might explore the pretty water a little in the afternoons.

Ikeni, on the pulling jigs how do you know how deep your pullin? ie go over a known depth and let out line til you bump bottom? With the bandits there is a chart to at least give me an idea.

There are charts for pulling jigs as well (on the main forum.) Weight of line, amount of line out, weight of jigs and speed all effect the depth they run. The bumpin bottom at a known depth you mention is a good way to be certain.
