5-2 Lake McMurtry Stillwater

Fished from 6:15 - 9:15, water temp 70, wind SW 5-10, investigated a new creek arm. Caught total of 31: (1) 3 lb channel cat, 1 perch, 2 sandbass, 2 bass, and 25 crappie. Target species was crappie of which I cleaned 8 smallest 10 1/2" biggest was 12 1/2" (1 lb exactly) 3 had eggs of which 2 two were bloody and the other I don't know if the eggs were getting ready to be dropped or if they were going to be absorbed: they were lighter yellow color than the others.

Anyway fun night trying to learn more how to fish McMurtry and catch my favorite fish. Trying to get enough for my mom for mothers day and the rest of my family. Crappie is her favorite fish to eat and I did the same thing last year for the first time, so trying to make it a tradition.

I fished McMurtry and Blackwell a lot in college (1997-2004). By far the best crappie spot is off a little bridge on a creek that runs between the two lakes. You have to drive about 8 miles of dirt road but you'll catch a lot of 2-3 lb crappie and a few walleye also. Also, if you have a boat, fish the rip rap on both lakes. We were bass fishing once throwing rattle traps at the rip rap and caught about 30 crappie within an hour.

Anybody done any fishing out there lately. I have had good luck from the courtesy dock before, but I haven't been back in a while.

I didn't know that there was a creek that connected the two. I looked on Google and nothing appears to connect. I work right behind the dam of Blackwell. I'll have to drive around this evening to see if I can find a bridge like you are talking about.

I have a Oklahoma back roads map that shows a creek running between the two lakes, but does not actually connect them. It looks like they may connect at Stillwater Creek below the Blackwell dam.

Penny I have not been out there in a while and have not heard any reports but I hope to get out there soon and if I do will let you know.
aserioushunter I looked too on google and couldn't find any that connected. Did you figure it out driving around?
Bigmarv are you referring to the spot on McElroy near Cottonwood?
Dscon can you take a look at google maps and refer to where you think it might be?
