Blacknose? Lake Eufaula

Hi! New here! I fish at Lake Eufaula (north end near Checotah). We catch a ton of big crappie off of our dock but almost all whites. Today, we caught a bunch of Blacks and for the first time in my life a "Blacknose." Questions: how rare are these Blacknose and what are they exactly? A hybrid? A black? Are they natural or introduced? Also, anyone have an explaination for the sudden hit of Black crappie here on the North end? Thanks! Mike

Welcome to Crappie.com, Barkett...lots of nice and helpful people here. Never saw or heard of a black nose. We catch plenty of white and black though. Hope someone out there has some information on this black nose.

Thanks for posting those pics. I'm no expert on Crappie genetics, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn once and I'll give you my two cents worth.

I believe that the black nose trait is rare. I've only caught 5 this year and of those, only one has been over 10 inches. The other 4 were dinks.

I think it's just one of those weird genetic traits that show up every once in a while. I don't think they're a separate species.

Of course, I'd be willing to help you do further scientific research on this subject, just provide me with the GPS Coordinates of your dock... :D

Can't say why the Blackies moved in on ya. The last few times I've been to Graves Creek, I've caught more Black Crappie than I normally do.

I'm currently working on another scientific project myself involving Black Crappie. I'm trying to determine whether the Black Crappie are better tasting than White Crappie. So far my finding are inconclusive and will require more scientific research...much more! :rolleyes:

Now if I could only get some Government funding for this project...

That's a nice one! At our fist get together we asked the biologist about the blacknose and he stated they are a black crappie with a genetic coloring that produces the stripe. As OkieDon says they all eat the same. The blacks are definatly spreading all over now, we even caught some way south this year for the first time.

I caught a couple this weekend also. I notice I normally catch them in rocky areas.

Great responses and great posts. Hilarious too. Thank you. Love this forum. I like the blackies as their filets are nice and thick. Eufaula is definitely having a great season. I am still cathing nice big crappies off the dock about 8 feet deep in 20 feet of water. Not having much luck off the shore so I wonder if the wether has delayed the spawn quite a bit. Its pretty cool getting more Blacks this year. Didn't think I would ever see this many in the murky far north end. The blacknose was an extra treat.

I Fish A Pond And Every Crappie In It Have That Black Stripe As Well, This Is A Deep Clear Water Rocky Pond.
