Default Mercury 150 XR6 and local repair shops

Hey all, I have the above mentioned XR6. It's a 2002, been garaged with the exception of time on the water. Knock on wood, it has always fired right away after being put in water. Now it fires right away and runs like a top. Then we stop to fish/swim, and it doesn't want to start. It acts flooded and finally fires, runs rough, and smokes up the lake. After running, its back to running like a top.

I'm hoping replacing the spark plugs will do, I've owned the boat since new and replaced them once (2003, seriously). Do you think this will work, or do I need to prepare for a rebuild???? Is it safe to run for now and finish out the summer?? I usually fish all winter long.

I remember my dad owning a 2 stroke Mercury and rebuilding several times. I don't want to get into the "Money Pit" boat scenario.

If it does need to an overhaul, what recommendations do everyone have about the ProCraft dealer in Glenpool? I've used them 2X for the lower unit and water pump and been very happy.

    You guys sound off, please!

I'm no mechanic but would suspect carbs over plugs or major repair work.

Sounds like it may be a carb flaot that isn't set right or has a pinhole in it and needs replaced. Only some carb work and no overhaul. A set of plugs would do wonders also. Get ready for some labor though cause its like $95 an hour at our local shops. If you get down to Eufaula I have used Lake Shore Marine on Texanna Road, about 2 miles east of hwy 69 blue bldg on the south side of the road after crossing the railroad tracks. Phil is the fellers name and he is good.....Ranger

My Mercury EFI needed some work last week, remebering this post I went by LakeShore Marine, he does not work on EFI but told me what he suspected was the problem and recommended going to Eufaula Marine Services on Highway 9 in Longtown. Took it there and he fixed me up right away (overnight). Got a good vibe from both of these places.
