Looks like rain for today, so I get a day off unless I work inside. Might slip off and try to catch a few.:D
sorry George, the pecan pie has been eaten all up!
hey Stink...is that the stairway to heaven?? What is that metal thing on the right?
Yep, that's a boot scrapper, mud belongs on the outside. I had it set straight the day I poured the concrete for the base step, but later it settled a bit and is now a bit less than level..........lol.
(I will wait until after moving the wood stove in and furniture before I finish the railing on the porch/deck)
Attachment 49054
I finished the outside trim today around the patio door, entry door, and picture window. This was the last of the work for the exterior of the cabin and its officially finished on the outside........woo hoo!!!!
Now I can focus on finishing the inside and I should be done within two more weeks at the most. Thanks for looking and wish me luck on the remaining items to be done.:)
Good deal Stink. Glad you got the exterior done before winter sit's in.
Lookin good,
Gman
Thanks buddy, sure is a load off knowing the outside stuff is done. Weather has been the biggest factor in this escapade since I started a year ago in August.
Last fall was horrible and this fall has been one of the prettiest in memory. I guess it all works out if you just giver time.:o
That a nice lake cabin. You have doing a great job on it.
Thanks midnight, appreciate your compliment. Water main was cut up above my place and a torrent of water is running down the hill and I took this picture of the creek. This is how it looks when its raining heavy and I got to take this picture without a drop of rain hitting me;
Attachment 49108
I'm tempted to sit down in my lawn chair on the ramp and listen to this water as it flows down my creek (it makes this wonderful-soothing sound) but I suppose I need to get back to work instead.
For the last 3 nights, this big ol hairy spider has built his web next to my flood lights. Its the most beautiful web I have ever seen and it's a marvel to see how much trouble he goes in spinning this eccentric circle.
Attachment 49263
This spider is about the size of a half-dollar and really a mean looking rascal. He stays on his toes too, the instant a bug flies into his web, he's all over it.
I learned something the last few nights watching him do his work, candleflies use that coating of dust covering their body to escape and make em less prone to stick to the web. As quick as he is, he doesn't always get em before they wiggle out and fly away.
Isn't nature a wonderful thing. I've never really thought about that dust all over candleflies, but it's a defense built in by nature and now I understand why the dust is there.
To stand on my deck and gaze at the precision used in building this web is interesting too. Those strands appear as though they were measured by some precise instrument, but they weren't. Just the genetic code built into the spider and his instinct to weave a web.
Another interesting thing I see is that the spider placed the web by the floodlight knowing that is where all the action is with flying insects.
I sat there last night and wondered what was going on in the spider's mind. Does he have any thoughts or is he just like a little machine, doing what his program tells him to do.
One more thing; When one of the candleflies escapes the spider, especially when he is all over them and they manage to wiggle free and fly away, they don't come back...... I mean they take off and disappear into the dark of the night.
Hope you found this interesting and I hope your next fishing trip is a success.:D
Stink - Sounds like a big garden spider. Is he black and yellow or red and black??
sort of a grayish/light brown color George. Almost the color of a cigar ash. He's been around here for a long time, I've seen him using the tree next to the house as his web stand. I actually walked into his web this summer and went to kill him, but thought better not to. Glad I left him alone now.
That's neat. I suspect you are starting to kick back and enjoy the fall colors from your porch. It sure feels good to get the cabin done, doesn't it. Now cut plenty of wood for your stove cause you may need it. Drink an adult beverage, smoke a fine cigar and enjoy the fruits of your labors, it is loooooooooooonnnnnnnnnggggggggg overdue.:)
Here are some pics of the interior of the cabin after the laminated flooring has been installed.
Attachment 49608
The tile has just been laid (notice the fan helping to dry the quick-set) and will be grouted later this evening. This is where the wood stove will set. It will be here next week and I'm hoping to have it installed and heating the house soon there after.
Attachment 49609
I've still got to install the transitional pieces at each door where the flooring meets and trim around the tile for the wood stove, but today is a designated day of rest. Done about all I am going to do today and I'm just barely able to walk after spending the last three days installing the flooring. My knees and everything connected to them are sore and worn out. I just kept telling myself, get this installed and it will be the last time you ever have to do a laminated floor.
That's about it for now and I want to thank you for looking.:)
Getting real close to being finished with my cabin. Still have to have the kitchen cabinets installed and that will be done the 2nd week of December if all goes according to plans.
Attachment 49610
Here's a picture looking through the picture window towards the lake. Still a lot of leaves on the trees, but the view will get better this winter.

Looks nice.
Looks like your man cave is coming along very nicely.
Thanks guys!:)
I really marveled at your description of the spider and his web. You are really observent, Stink. That cabin of yours is magnificent to say the least...and you did it yourself..nothing more enjoyable that knowing you make it and did a great job. Hope to see it early next year.
Thanks for the compliment Southern Woman, makes me feel good about all this. I sure am looking forward to having you and Rigrunner here for a visit later on. Looks like I won't be making it out to Ft. Cobb until after the 1st of the year, but I want to pay you guys a visit also. Maybe ol Crappie Josh and I can car pool out to see you because he enjoys fishing Cobb too. It will be the 1st time for me and also, the gentleman that bought my little pontoon boat has a place at Cobb and he wanted me to come out to see him someday. I don't think he stays there much in the winter though.
Here's a neat story about observation skills: Brand new group of medical students are assigned to their medical instructor and he advises them they will be learning how to observe that day.
Oh, they're all eager and wearing their new white lab jackets, got their stethoscopes proudly adorned around the back on their necks, and ready to impress the instructor.
He takes the group down to the morgue at the hospital and has the attendant pull out a corpse. He tells them to all gather around and they do......each one has an unobstructed view of the dead person laying their without clothes.
The old doctor rolls over the corpse onto his belly and then does something that stuns the new medical students, he pokes his index finger into the anus of the dead person. He's standing there with his finger inserted and ask all of them if they can see what he has done.
They all nod and then he pulls his finger out and tells them to repeat exactly what he did. One by one they walk up to the corpse, insert their index finger and then quickly pull it free. When they've all finished the medical instructor really blows their minds, he inserts his finger into his mouth and holds it there for a little while.
After he pulls it out of his mouth he tells them all to repeat his action and they do........ slowly inserting their own finger into the mouth, almost gagging, but eventually, each medical student completes what the medical instructor has shown them.
And then the old doctor tells them: "The lesson today has been observation and each one of you failed this lesson. But I hope in the future you will be more observant because had you been really paying attention, you would have noticed that I inserted the index finger of my left hand into the corpse, but used the index finger of my right hand to stick in my mouth."
:D
Ewww. Lol.

Got my wood burning stove hooked up last Saturday and have been enjoying it ever since. Heat pump doesn't kick on and I'm hoping to save on my electric bill while using the wood stove.
The wood stove needs a good paint job and I ended up having to use a piece of rusty stove pipe, but I am impatient and decided to hook it up now and paint it later. I can't find the right color right now anyway.
This stove is around 20 years old, is full of soapstone and weighs in around 400 lbs. Once you get it fired up, the heat is wonderful and even after the fire dies down, it keeps putting out heat for hours.
I'm enjoying this thing more than I thought I would, thanks for looking.:D
I bet that does put out some heat.
Stink- The secret to the wood stove is not build tooooooooo big of a fire in it because it can force you to open the windows. I been there. I put a box fan that I got at Wallyworld behind mine and it moves the air and warms my cabin quickly. U B in heavan now. It bea fishin time now buddy! You has arrived. PARTY AT STINKS!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
Dude...you really need to get out more...and leave the Jack and Coke alone
Serioiusly, it's funny that you mention that because I wonder the same things. When I try and share them with my Wife, she just looks at me like I fell off my rocker!
I've pondered away many hours wondering how in the world a squirrel thinks it's going to remember where it buried one of a thousand acorns it must bury in the Fall. I mean some squirrels appear to take the utmost care and concern when burying a an acorn. It looks like they have to find JUST the right spot before digging.
Then occasionally I think about going and stealing that acorn after he's left, so that just in case he does remember where he buried it, he'll think he's going senile when he comes back for it and it's gone. Oh yeah, my Wife says I can have a twisted mind sometimes also
That cabin of yours is looking really good. Is that a soapstone stove?
Edit: Just reread your post...yeah it's soapstone...that's what I get for speed and skim reading at the same time!
Don, I used to run my teachers nuts, especially the ones that had sat themselves up on a perch, thinking they were far above us kids in intelligence. I'd study the lesson for the next day's lecture and study information I knew even the teacher wouldn't know, just to quiz he or she about incidental facts.
Thanks all for your comments on my stove.:D
Okiedon- You have tooooooooooo much time on your hands.
Got a start on my kitchen cabinets today and was able to get the "uppers" installed in the northeast corner.

I decided against building my cabinets, wanted to make them out of cedar, but you really need a well equipped shop to make cabinets and to be honest, I'm really tired folks. Just want to be finished and get my life back.
Thanks for looking:)
Looking good....you really have done a great job. I have been watching this all the way and its fantastic.
Yes, Stink, get back to your normal life...you have done tons of work on your cabin and it is all great but enough..
Stink, you're doing fine!
I understand about wanting to get your life back. It's been nearly 3 years since our home flooded. There was no flood insurance and we've just been paying to rebuild it as we go. It's been a blessing in some regards, but I still have all the crown molding and baseboard to go and one bathroom. I'm just burned out of working on it!!
Carpentry and working with wood has always been one of my most favorite things to do. Started taking woodshop in junior high school and learned the basics well by the time I graduated.
I've really enjoyed building this house, been frustrated more than once, but overall, no regrets and haven't had any major problems.
One commonality shared with others building their own home or doing a remodel, is a person naturally reaches a point where they just become less enthusiastic about the whole deal.
And when you finish the task, all the negative feelings magically fade away ........slowly.
I console myself knowing that this will all come to an end in the near future and I will be finished. And at my age, I doubt and have said previously, I will never do this again. Nice thing about it, I won't have to because this place will never be sold while I am alive and plan to hand it down to my kids for their enjoyment down the road.
I put these updates in here to share my progress with my friends here at crappie dot com for two reasons; one to show and one to grow
Your comments and feedback are very welcome and give me encouragement at times when I need a boost. So, I thank all you guys for keeping me positive and really appreciate your comments and compliments.:D
"As I stood gazing at the spider I couldn't help but imagine what was going through the spider's mind." Now I wonder as the spider sat there gazing at me, if he was thinking the same thing about me.
You have a great outlook on everything Stink. It is a wonderful feeling when you can accomplish a task or project and feel good about it no matter how hard or long the road has been. Merry Christmas to you.
Stink - It is NOW time to play!!!
Made a little more progress by getting my kitchen window trimmed out and the light above the sink installed;

Different angle:
Attachment 51505
I still need to apply a couple of coats of clear finish to the new oak and put the trim board beneath the window stool to be completely finished with the window trim.
I was even able to install (3) "mini"-shelves on the right side. A good place for salt and pepper shakers and my coffee mug.
Thanks for looking.:)
Attachment 51713
Did someone ask for another picture? I don't think so, but here is the latest on the kitchen cabinets with the finish applied to the window trim and an overall view of all the cabinets. Not much different from other pictures I have posted.
I'll sure be glad to get all the kitchen cabinets installed so I can have use of my kitchen again, mainly the kitchen sink. Having to use the bathroom sink now and that's a hassle. Preparing meals ain't easy either, but I haven't missed a meal..........lol
Thanks for looking.:)
Looking good
