Oologah Archives

I was on vacation last week and got the chance to fish three straight days on Oologah. The crappie are biting really well in brush piles no deeper than 17 feet. I rig my line using 4lb test with the hook one foot above a 1/4 oz bank sinker. It's the best rig to get out of heavy brush. I usually drop the line till it slacks and reel up a foot. Usually get a thump on the way up. Nearly limited out on every trip. The fish are aggressive from 5:30 - 9:00 AM. Evenings from 5 till dark. Tried to night fish with one of those BPS green submergible lights, all it attracted was mayflies and micro organisms. LOL. Yes the summer fishing is good right now.

Good job . I have to get out as soon as i can and use some minnows on brush.

I fished Saturday morning and as Kevin stated, I ran into him at Tacora Mart. It was a pleasure to meet him and I will be fishing with him soon. On to the report. The fishing was a little slower than usual but we managed 35 keepers by 11:00. We fished brush in 10 feet of water with minnows. The fish were just off the bottom. The bite actually seemed to get better as it got later but you can only stand so much of that heat.

Eufaula Boy finally got a chance to come up and fish with me today and tomorrow. We made it out on the water about 4 pm and were greeted by a thunderstorm as soon as we unloaded the boat. We stayed close to the marina the 1st hour or so to make sure the lightning didn't get too bad. We then ran to Blue Creek and fished several brush piles in 10-15 fow. We caught fish on almost every one of them, problem was they were all about 8-9 inches. We had to stay in Blue Creek for a while because the wind was blowing hard behind the storm. The wind layed a little after 6 and we headed up the lake. We fished some main lake brushpiles in the same depth and really got into them. We caught about 100 fish and kept 27 total. Most of them were 10-11 inches with a couple around 12 inches. No really big fish all afternoon, we quit at 830. I fished with minnows all afternoon and Brian fished about half the time with jigs. Brian probably caught 15-20 fish on a white crappie pro jig head with a blue/pearl baby shad. Going to try the shallow creek pattern in the morning.

I would gladly pay someone to teach me how to catch the Wallies on Oologah. I know absolutely nothing about wallies on a lake. Do you catch a lot of them on Oolagah or is it just kind of a now and then kinda thing?

Since the last couple of years that they had heavy releases alot of the walleye go with the flow. now there are still some there but hard to get on . But they did put a few more in . I think last time was 09' and i have caught that year class . I mainly fish t- bird for saugeyes and stockton, bull shoals for true walleyes. Been on a quest for them the past 5 years or so and have learned a lot so far. Granted i'm no al lindner by no means but i can help some.i have also fished 4-5 lakes in kansas too.

Here is the Big Creek report! Don't go!!!!! Brian and I fished from noon til 5 in Big Creek and the river, only caught 5 crappie and a couple of bass. A single 12 in black crappie was the only keeper. We tried all kinds of jigs and colors, even tried minnows. No luck! So my advice is stay in the lake and fish the 10-15 foot brush piles.
