I like this thread. I would love it to stay active. I too live in a river town. Portsmouth, OH. I have never really fished the Ohio for crappie. I always have to drive to Rocky Fork for my "local lake". I would love any spots/tips close to Portsmouth. I think I am going to head towards Brush Creek and put in there for my first attempt. Looking at some of the size of these river crappie has peaked my interest! I will definitely contribute once I get my boat in the water to this thread.

Brush creek can be great but the gate is locked now. Unless you have another place to launch.

I bought a key from him before he closed for the season. Stupid b!?@$ at eagle creek should take notes on how to take care of customers. Pretty sure that stretch of river is done for on Ohio side now. Ridley ramps a mess on all gov owned ramps are closed by the ones leasing them now. It's either Aberdeen or bullskin. Nothing in between now

Fished one the river creeks yesterday afternoon for about 3 hours. 1 crappie in that whole time.
Tried the places where we caught many nice ones 3 weeks before but nothing.

The water did not look really muddy. A little high. But... I was surprised by the water temps. I thought after all this rain and warm weather in late December that the water would be warmer. It was 38.5 degrees. There were thin sheets of ice through the creek.

We fished slow and threw everything at them. Obviously the water temps are slowing them down but it must have been an off day. Probably won't get to try again for several weeks.

I found the same thing Thursday. I seen 38 degrees in the creeks and headed to the marinas. The bite was pretty good in there. Got a limit in 3 hrs. The most stable back waters you can find are the best in the winter. At least for me. Not many big ones but lots of quality fish

Very nice. I had heard crappie don't move much at all in the winter and we did so well a few weeks back in the creek in our favorite hole that I assumed they were all still there. But after a while, we suspected they had moved either further up creek or just into the river. Since I haven't really found any good holes once I get to the river, we headed up creek and the water only got colder. For me, next year will be about finding a few more holes out in the main river so I have a few more options.

Don't forget to look for a shallow bite in the winter. Some of my spots are only four to five foot deep but tend to be more stable than creeks. Caught em many times 2 ft deep on jigs with 39 to 40 degree water temp. What part of the river are you fishing?

Have you ever fished the marina in turtle creek? Pretty decent little backwater near the mouth of the creek. Ideal place for em to lay up for winter, if there is bait there of course. I seen in earlier post you've mentioned big bone. That's why I asked

Big Bone is where I go 50% of the time but I have ventured out a little. I fished Craig's Creek in Warsaw last year and from what you describe, that sounds like it might be productive in the winter - if it doesn't ice over. It's pretty shallow and the whole area around the marina is 7 feet deep or less.

I'm not sure where Turtle Creek is but I may investigate. I have a smaller boat so I tend to stay close to where I put in.

Turtle creek is across from craigs. You also might want to check the creeks around Lawrenceburg in. Tanners is a good crappie creek. The next two downriver indiana side from tanners should be good too. I think one is hogan. All should have good access and just a little drive down 71 from big bone

Question. When fishing the Ohio River for crappie, do most you fish the main river or just the creeks that run into it?

I can only speak for myself, but I'm in the creeks.

I know some people fish the main in the summer and catch some below thw dams. But I always fish backwaters.
