Thread: Bad starter?

I Have a 1995 Johnson 130 hp model #J130TLEO / ID#G03944322 when I tried starting at the lake last it turned over like normal for the first two tries, then it started turning over slow like it had a dead battery, starter was pretty hot to the touch. I have made sure the battery is fully charged - checked all the wire connections to the starter to make sure they are clean and tight - cleaned the shaft on the starter that the smaller toothed wheel rides up and down on ( it was stuck up on the fly wheel at the lake ) - still getting the same results.

Question

1) how can I be sure it's the starter that's bad before I go plop down the cabbage for a new one?

2) is there a good online source for a new starter ( the marina close to me said it's 250.00 for a new one and it'd take 3 to 5 days to get )

3) is there a particular starter to stay away from (aftermarket-brand-etc)

James, here is one place. You can look and get OEM part numbers. They do not list a 1995. Jump from 94 to 97 but bet it is same part. My advice is check around for a starter rebuild place close. They can usually rebuild those. Another good place to check is with Jones Trolling motor in Arkansas. Give him a call and he usually will be able to help.
If it was mine first thing I would do is pull it down and clean armature real good and get all the brush dust out and check to see how bad brushes are worn.

Trouble Shooting
First is check voltage at each step in the process. Could be some bad wireing or even a corroded terminal. If you have a service manual for your motor, it should detail all the steps. I had a similar problem last summer that actually ended up being the solenoid switch/relay. This was finally found after some bad wiring was replaced (most likely cause of solenoid failure) Using a multimeter, Igntion switch had 12.97 volts going to relay panel, relay panel to solenoid 12.13 volts - bad wire, then relay panel to solenoid 12.97 volts. Audible click at solenoid. Yet voltage at starter was only 11.5. Jumpered solenoid with starter wire removed got 12.96 volts yet without jumper not enough voltage and low voltage can kill a starter.

Short of that many auto parts places can check the load draw on your starter which will tell you you yeah or ney on the starter

James, there is a place in maysville that rebuilds starters that I have taken many many starters to and have had very good luck...... They are called maysville alternator and starter........ Im no wiring genius but I'd somehow start there and if that isn't it have the starter rebuilt..... Some times they will have me drop it off and pick it up in an hour or two....
