Most likely a catch-pole, which is a snare pole. Cats have a tendancy to "strangle" much easier than most animals, so getting a shoulder in there helps. Pin the animal down with the pole, and use your feet to unset the trap.

Traps seldom ever cause injury to the animal, minor cut at most. The injury's typicaly occur from the struggle of the trap. As long as the trap is swiveled, and secured with a short chain, the animal is simply restrained until you arrive.

As far as releasing him, id consult with Jerry Clower "A coon huntin story"...WHOOOOOWEEE Shoot this thang! LOL

Since you said he's a nuisance animal trapper (think TurtleMan) he probably uses Hav-a-hart live traps. Getting something out of those can be tricky, too. Even so, I would think a trapper would have a moment of fear before releasing a animal that can inflict that kind of damage.

Well, isn't the havahart traps like a cage. I don't think that's what he used.... I can see the cats paw in some type of clamp type trap I think???

the cat was caught in a coilspring trap, or a foothold trap. Likely your buddy was trying to catch a coyote, and the cat happend to find the set first.
