Did you pop the hook off the cable or did you pull the pin out of the controller?
On a camper the breakaway brake controller is powered by the onboard 12 volt battery. On a trailer without an onboard battery there is a battery pack that's recharged when plugged into the tow.
The pin in the breakaway controller has a notch close to the end. If the pin is pulled the end breaks off, doesn't do any good trying to put it back. The points in the controller can fuse together.
As long as the battery pack has power the brakes will stay on. You can cut one of the wires and kill the power. The controller will need replacing.
I paid $5 to marine tech for that answer.
I'm sorry guys but that ranger trail trailer should have hydraulic disc brakes. If he pulled the cable it should have applied the brakes by pulling a latch that compressed the master cylinder and locked it in place. Have to release latch and reattach cable.
We are not working on a camper trailer with electric brakes. I paid for that info with a bunch of skint mashed fingers.
Ranger has the hydraulic disc brakes and a safety brake. You have to be plugged into your truck for it to backup, going forward is possible bc youre not putting pressure on it, but backing up puts pressure on the cylinder and wont allow it (dont ask how i know this, it was a head scratcher one tired evening!) The safety cable, like it fell off the truck, or leave it hooked up and drive off from trailer, will lock the brakes and you will have to manually unlock the cylinder before you will move it again and put the cable back in.
And now that i read everything on the thread, cray beat me to it!
Look up “trailer brake actuator reset” on YouTube. There is a little tab or button on the bottom of the master cylinder in front of a small hole. Stick a screwdriver up into the hole and prize the actuator rod back while pressing up on the button. That should release the brakes.
