Never ever pull a load in overdrive and if you have a newer truck use the tow-haul function. Got a good friend I begged for over 2 years not to tow in o/d. He pulls a trailer every day and pontoon on weekends. His reply, it makes to much noise and burns to much fuel. Last fall he calls me and asks, WHY is my transmission shooting oil out the top and spraying on my trailer?? Well when it gets in the shop it got a hole in top of case. When tore down all that running in o/d had put so much load on the overdrive planaterys it had worn out the shaft bushing and gear had eat a hole through top of case. Then 7500 later I asked him if he had saved enough on fuel to pay for all the work and truck rental to off set the cost. Never got a answer but you can bet on one thing today. You get in his truck and a trailer is hooked to it, the tow-haul is where it's supposed to be. And this is a heavy duty f250 with the heavier transmission and everything.

I towed a 30 ft fifth wheel with a 18 ft boat behind it with a 1/2 gmc 5.3 l in OD did use tow haul button. Heat kills transmissions simple fact. I had HD cooling and added the largest trans cooler I could get. Replaced trans once and had 527000 miles when I retired her

I agree with Torch heat kills the trans. if your hauling a heavy boat get a big trans. cooler and install it. I bet the tournament pro's have trans. cooler's on there trucks.

Never use the tow button but I always pull my boat with a 3/4 ton truck, gear ratio and heat are hard on the tranny. Pulling the camper I use the tow button. Fuel mileage don't matter none, gas burner 3/4 ton GM ain't gonna get no mileage anyway.

I run my old green truck in O/D every where I go even with camper in bed. But I ain't got one of them girly transmissions. I got a old time 5 speed manual with O/D. Transmission going to be my least problem. That's with fingers crossed:Rofl:Rofl

It depends on the load. I too added a 36k gvw trans cooler to my truck and it makes a big difference. My trucks problem is HP and gearing. I have the 4.8 and 3.31 gears. But never ever run in OD and always have tow mode on.

Run an allison trans 3/4 ton. Asked the transmission folks about the tow button when pulling my camper on level roads. They said I don't need it there unless it starts down shifting a lot, just watch trans mission temp....I have no expertise.

I use the tow haul if I go very far, but back and forth from the house to Grenada, I just drop it in od and roll
