I was in a similar situation about a month ago. Got two units and neither was working. The smaller one hadn't been working for a couple years, it just cools the room over the garage which we never used so we hadn't bothered trying to get it fixed. Then last year the big main unit which is less than 5 years old started giving me trouble at the end of the season so this spring I called Conway services for their tune up deal on both units. I was thinking the newer one probably just needed to be cleaned and the older on just needed a charge of coolant. Conways tech came out and told me both units were shot and not worth repairing and I needed an upgrade. He said he couldn't believe someone put in a unit less than 5 years ago that still used r22. Their sales guy came out the next day and gave me an estimate of over $14,000 to replace both units. We got a second opinion from a friend of a friend who works in hvac and the guy had them both fixed in less than a couple hours for around $400. The smaller unit he was able to fix with a $5 part he already had on his truck, the bigger unit he was able to get the replacement part under warrantee and we just paid his labor and for the coolant to recharge it after he fixed it. That's was the only thing Conway's tech was right about, the old r22 coolant is expensive as hell and that was the bulk of the $400. I'll never call CONway again.

In most cases a small local owned business with a good reputation (mom and pop) will serve you the best, both price wise and service wise as well as backing their product and services in the future. The ones running ads promoting deals on inspections, tuneups, the works are just using that as a foot in the door technique. Word to the wise, don't bite...

So true, I needed a second unit (A/C and furnace) installed in the addition I built to the main house for an additional 900 sq. ft. to what I have currently, duct work underneath and all (I live on a ridge). I put together the package unit for the main house myself 30+ years ago - don't believe in split units.

Called one of the big names in town, and he came out saying he needed to measure this and that, along with the specifications how I built it. Telling me I need to install a 60 amp circuit, where to install the intake and vents, etc. Ran the fella off. Then called a local outfit and told them exactly what I wanted and where. Done deal. Nice Carrier package unit for less than $5,000, duct work and all.

Son-in-law's ac friend says he can get a Payne, made by Goodman 3 ton 14 seer for $1,450, Bryant 3 ton 14 seer for $1,650. Son-in-law hasn't said a thing about the heater. He'll help and pay for the installation. Hasn't sent me contact info yet. My son-in-law isn't welcomed in my yard ever again.

It's sad when you do an email contact, first words are do not call before 10 am, reply to the email with the number you'll be calling from. Check the phone at 10 and have missed a lot of calls starting at 7 am and no replies to you email.

I got a buddy that can give you a better deal.

I do this for a living in New construction and retro fit and changing out old units been doing it for 4 years now shame you live that far away or I would do it for you

I met another dealer today. 14 seer 3 ton ac, standard 80,000 btu heater 5/10 warranty $6,970. Save the tax on a cash sell.
Or, 18 seer 3 ton ac, fancy 80,000 btu heater, fancy thermostat 10/10 warranty $9,630. Save the tax on a cash sell.
There's a catch, the company wants a record of yearly service to warrant the parts for the 10 years. A service call on an ac unit is about $69 and doesn't cover freon. This unit will need a call for the ac and heater. His special is $150 per year with no added fees. So add another $1,500.

We hired another dealer yesterday, suppose to install today.
16 seer 3 ton air, second in line heater with thermostat, $4600, cash will save the tax.

Most manufacturers have there own warranty if you register the equipment the other end would be the labor to put part in

That's what we did on our big unit, when we had it put in the guy that put it in for us went ahead and registered it and left us the warranty paperwork with the serial number and the install date. We lucked out in that the company my friend's friend works for does warranty work on Goodmans and they were able to get the part under warranty and I paid him for the labor and coolant recharge.

Had a 5 year warranty and the unit was 4 1/2 years old, lucky there too.
