I use aquarium filters and two air stones, key is water changes for me. Also, I don't feed them, crates more crap!!!:Rofl
I feed mine once a week. I got a custom filter system from Jigflinger made out of a 5 gallon bucket. He's an expert on minners!!!!
This is the filter systems that I have been using. It has a built in aerator. It is a submersible unit meaning it has to be completely under the water. So far I have really been pleased with them.

if your a community water system are the bait holder treatments that you can buy at any sporting goods sufficient to get the chlorine out. we just upgraded our treatment plant and i think its got a lot more chemicals it the water now. i put just a few in it a while back and they didn't last 10 minutes. been keeping my tank down at a friends house who has a well but that is a bigtime hassle
Go to Wally World and buy you an RV water filter that screws on a hose. It removes chlorine and metals from the water. Works like a champ and no chemicals needed. I use one all the time. Even put water for my minners in my travel coolers straight out of the faucet with one.
Just a note. Run water through the filter for a minute to remove the loose carbon in it. Once the water gets clear out of the filter it's good to go.
Here's the one I buy at walmart. One for the camper and one for the minnow tank. That's if and when I use city water.

I mostly collect rain water in buckets, pour the water into another bucket through an old tee shirt to filter out the trash.
I make filters with 2 liter drink bottles, lump charcoal, pillow fluff and cord.
