Default Need depth finder around or under $300

I know this has been on here a bunch before but I didn't need a depth finder then. I need to replace my front depth finder (trolling motor mount). I usually catfish the MS River but occasionally like to Crappie fish. I certainly don't need some of the fine electronics I've seen on here before but I would like something nice that a novice can learn to use correctly. I have looked at these:
    Garmin Striker 5 DV?
    Humminbird Helix 5 DI?
    Lowrance Hook 4?
    .
How important is "downscan"? Do I need it?
I got some Reward points to use so anything from BassPro would be a bonus.
    Thanks for any input/suggestions.

I personally think if you learn ur 2-d very good that you will not necessarily need DI. If you are going to be vertically jigging brush piles or something then u may....but for me I almost never use my downscan. It does help you locate exactly where the brush is located because the cone angle is much less. I love my SI. Its side image and 2d for what I use my graph for. Other people may have better experiences with their DI. But the different cost would not put me on DI.

If I was buying that size unit I would go with the Garmin. Think they have a much clearer picture.
